11/5/2022 0 Comments Triumph tr3a clutch fluid![]() ![]() ![]() My opinion, the TR3 trunnions were designed for grease and don't work well with oil (it tends to leak out and being dry is worse than any kind of lubricant). You may find some traces of the "oil vs grease in trunnions" debate. I also don't service it nearly as often as I should. But I doubt it makes much difference, anything you buy today is much better than what these cars used when new. I intend to try going 5 years, if I can ever get all the other problems to stay sorted out that longįor grease, I like the Sta-Lube "moly graph" series. And the additives do wear out, even if you don't drive the car, so it needs to be changed periodically. But you need the anti-corrosion additives found in anti-freeze all the time, otherwise the aluminum thermostat housing forms a battery against the cast iron head and rots away from the inside. Of course, I live where it never freezes, you may need to run a higher concentration in NJ. I found a quart at my local industrial supply houseĬoolant: I use 30%-40% Prestone "Any color" antifreeze, mixed with RO (reverse osmosis filtered) tap water. Little hard to find, most auto stores don't carry 20 weight any more, but a single bottle will last a long, long time. This is also what I use in the steering box (which has a brass bearing in it).Ĭarb dash pots: straight 20 weight motor oil seems to give me the best throttle response. This is a GL5 oil, which means it provides more protection than GL4, but does not use the "active sulfur" additive than can degrade the brass thrust washers. The Valvoline VR1 would be my second choice (I used it for many years before discovering the MT-90).ĭifferential : Valvoline Synpower gear oil 75W90. Some people claim you should use non-detergent motor oil, but Triumph specifically switched from motor oil to GL4 gear oil around 1960 supposedly because they were having too many warranty returns with motor oil. Dang expensive and kind of hard to find (I mail order through Amazon) but really makes the synchronizers work well. Not the cheapest, but goes on sale once or twice a year (so stock up). Has plenty of ZDDP, still meets the older API requirements, readily available at most auto parts stores. Kind of like debating whether Coors is better for you than BudweiserĮngine oil : Valvoline VR1 "racing oil" 20W50. What fluids to use is an endlessly debated topic, with no clear consensus.
